We review the best weatherproof cycling overshoes that will keep your feet dry this winter

1. CASTELLI DILUVIO SHOECOVER 16
£35.00
www.saddleback.co.uk

These Diluvios have a taller 16cm height than the original design for increased coverage, and a full-length reflective waterproof zip at the rear with a strengthened heel. The soft 3mm neoprene is stretchy and easy to put on, giving a very close fit, especially around the calf. Being neoprene they aren’t waterproof, but insulate very well, even on cold, wet days. The cleat and heel openings are reinforced to survive heavy use, and they are one of the best fitting overshoes on test.

Overall 4/5

2.  ENDURA DELUGE ZIPLESS
£27.99
www.endura.co.uk

The Deluge overshoes are unusual in having no form of zip or Velcro fastening, just very supple and stretchy neoprene, but even using the pull tab we still needed a great deal of dexterity and patience to put them on. That said, with a different shoe and cleat combination it was a faster process. The neoprene isn’t waterproof, but the cosy fit and fabric thickness mean they insulate very well, even in freezing fog. Reinforced heel and cleat openings proved very durable, and there are reflective logos on the heel and toe.

3.  SANTINI KRIOS WINTER AERO
£59.99
www.fisheroutdoor.co.uk

Despite their low bulk, Santini’s Krios overshoes are made from very strong and flexible Plastotex fabric, conforming perfectly to shoes and allowing excellent ankle articulation. They are also wind and waterproof, with a snug fit at the calf, which kept the majority of water out, even when submerged on a flooded road. The zip is offset to the inside of the ankle for comfort, and although it doesn’t lock in place, the pull didn’t loosen. Reinforced toe and heel panels shrug off daily wear, and reflective flatlock seams give good visibility.

Overall 3/5

4. NORTHWAVE H2O EXTREME
£29.99
www.i-ride.co.uk

Also available in black, Northwave’s Extremes earn their H2O credentials with a pliable coated polyurethane (PU) outer, rubber reinforced heel and toe, and thin fleece lining for warmth. A midsole Velcro fastening and heel loop aid entry, while the reflective and waterproof zip is offset with a camlock pull and Velcro tab at the ankle for extra security. We found fit to be generous, but the Extremes are quite stretchy, so for a snug fit we’d suggest sizing down. Rain protection was impressive, although they were not as warm as we would’ve liked.

Overall 5/5

5. PEARL IZUMI ELITE BARRIER
£49.99
www.madison.co.uk

Pearl Izumi’s Barrier overshoes are constructed from anatomically cut panels of 3mm neoprene, with a fleecy lining that provides superbly warm insulation and keeps the elements out effectively. A full-length rear opening makes them simple to put on or remove, with loads of
fit adjustment available from the Velcro fastening. Kevlar protects vulnerable sole sections and there are multiple reflective flashes for visibility. The only
penalty for all this warmth is bunching from the increased bulk.

Overall 3/5

6. BIOFLEX ZERO
£29.99
www.extra.co.uk

Bioflex offer the Zero as their overshoe for colder conditions, and we found them to be effective when riding in near freezing conditions. Two tabs help when pulling them on, but they’re still quite fiddly, although the fleece-lined stretchy waterproof outer material fits closely once in place. They are quite thin, but with a waterproof zip sealing the rear opening, the Zeros kept water at bay, and a Velcro tab ensures the zip pull doesn’t creep open. There’s a toughened toe panel and a single reflective patch on the heel.

Overall 4/5
