Kyklos Featherweight Plus Review
We pit the Kyklos Featherweight Plus against all terrain in our Four Ride Review.
Kyklos Featherweight Plus
The Featherweight Plus is new for 2012, developed from the Featherweight Ltd. The Plus switches to a conventional seatpost and the carbon lay-up has been revised for extra stiffness. This Killer edition gets a unique and stylish matt white and silver paint job. The frame features internal cabling, BB30, big chainstays for rigidity and slim seatstays for comfort. Our test bike came built with SRAM Red, an Enve cockpit and Edco Furka Competition carbon clincher wheels.
The FW-Plus’s low front end and very aggressive geometry reflect the fact that it was designed and developed by current road pros, and it loves to go fast. The 58mm wheels fitted to our test bike deliver noticeable extra speed once wound up on the flat. They’re impressively stable in crosswinds too so there’s no unnerving buffeting. These have Edco’s ceramic brake track coating which delivers superb braking, wet or dry, so you can ride fast with confidence.
Lighter than a catwalk model’s lunch and stiffer than over-trained legs, this frame is made for the steepest climbs. On tough hills, when you’re out of the saddle, the Edco wheels flex a bit and their weight, 1.7kg, while fair for a 58mm clincher, dulls the frame’s responses. In fairness, Edco do offer wheel sets much more suited to hills. We also tried the Kyklos on Enve 3.4s (1.2kg) and it was phenomenal – we smashed our best time on our local test climb.
The ride comfort is superb and proof that with the right engineering you don’t have to compromise smoothness to get low weight and stiffness. The FW-Plus deals with everything from high-frequency vibration to deep potholes equally well – it’s all significantly damped before reaching the bars, pedals or saddle. The well-proportioned head tube means you can get low with clip-on aero bars or set the stem slightly higher for comfort with regular bars.
The Featherweight Plus is a true superbike with a level of performance that easily justifies the price
