SRAM’s R2C shifters fit on the end of your aerobars and are designed to return to centre after each shift. This keeps the levers in line with your bars, theoretically giving you a small aero advantage while making it less of a stretch to shift. We’re dubious about the aero benefits but we liked not having to move as far to shift.

The carbon levers give a precise, positive shift. Our tendency to shift too many gears at once was eliminated because they need to return to a set position before you can make another change. This should be an advantage to avoid rhythm disruptions but not for technical courses. The only annoyance we had was that the front changer required two movements to change from the big to the small ring. This reduces the chance of throwing your chain – but that shouldn’t happen anyway with a correctly set up front mech.

Verdict
Makes shifting on the aerobars that little bit easier, but at a high price.

Performance 4/5
Value 2/5
Overall 3/5
