We caught up with Helen Jenkins briefly last week and asked her a few questions.

How are things going with your training and rehab?

Since the Olympics it’s taken a while to get over the injury because I trained on it for two months leading up to London. It’s made it harder to get over it. it feels like it’s turned a corner now. I have to be patient. The season starts in April and obviously I’d love to be racing, but I want to race the Commonwealths in 2014, I’ve got to take things a bit slower.

So what kind of work are you doing now?

I’m back to swim/bike/run training, the running isn’t very fast but it’s building up. I’ve been to Bisham Abbey [National Sports Centre] which is awesome. When people have been dealing with an injury for a long time it’s just going somewhere new, doing different strength and conditioning work.

Would you say that’s been the most important thing in getting over the injury?

Going to Bisham Abbey has been the turning point. I think the most important thing was the work I’ve done with my regular physio, Dan at the Welsh Institute of Sport. He’s really helped me and that’s helped be ready for the work I did at Bisham Abbey.

What are your aims this year, or are you playing it by ear?

I’m trying not to put a goal on it this year. There are things I’d like to do. I’m dying to do the Grand Final of course but we’ll see!

Did you have any fun during your downtime?

We had a good holiday last year with some friends. We’ve just been to California training. It was the perfect way to get back into training. Although I spent far too much time in the pool!

You’ve just joined with Science in Sport – is anything else new for 2013?

I’ve just joined SiS but I keep a lot of my main sponsors. It’s really exciting because I’ve been using their gels since I was young. I’ve been using Go caffeine gels. It’s exciting because they give me tailor-made products. It’s nice that people believe in me.
