Ironman 70.3 Berlin In 2013
Ironman 70.3 Berlin set for first race on 16 June 2013.
Ironman 70.3 Berlin’s race start, finish and transition area take place in what was once East Berlin. During the swim, the athletes will touch the old border between East and West Berlin before returning to the transition area to start the 90 km bike ride.
The triathlon’s bike course heads through the city to the Grunewald Forest, then heads back to Berlin onto the former airfield at Tempelhof Park. The 21 km run course takes place on the former airfield before heading through Hasenheid Park and the returning to the finish, which will also be on the airfield.
Before it closed in 2008, Tempelhof Airport was one of the oldest commercial airports in the world, and was renowned as one of the three iconic pre-World War II airports (along with London’s Croydon and Paris’ Le Bourget).
Also close to the race site is the famous East Side Gallery, a 1.3 km section of the Berlin Wall, which is made up of a series of paintings designed as an international memorial for freedom.
More specific information about the courses for Ironman 70.3 Berlin will be available in January, 2013. Go to www.ironmanberlin.com for more information.
