European Ironman events to offer increased Kona slots in 2013.
With only 1700 age group athletes able to line up for the World Championships in Kona, competition around the globe for a place is always highly sought after.
Whilst 70.3 UK Exmoor (June 16th, 2013) and Ironman UK in Bolton (August 4th, 2013) offer qualifying events in the UK, for any athletes looking to race in Europe as an alternative or additional opportunity, good news has arrived from abroad as Frankfurt Wiesbaden and Zurich all have further allocation in 2013.
The Frankfurter Sparkasse Ironman European Championship (July 7, 2013) has 100 qualification slots for the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii, an increase from the 75 offered this year.
The Ironman 70.3 European Championship in Wiesbaden (August 11, 2013) will be the only European Ironman 70.3 qualification race for Kona, offering 30 slots to athletes.
Ironman Switzerland in Zurich is offering an additional 10 slots, bringing its total to 60.
“After having to take Ironman Regensburg from our race calendar due to difficulties in finding a race date, we are delighted to have been able to keep the Kona slots in Germany. This emphasizes the value of the Ironman 70.3 European Championship in Wiesbaden,” says Kai Walter, Managing Director, Germany, of the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC).
In order to compete in the World Championships, every athlete must qualify through the allocated qualifying races. The only other option is to be awarded a place through the “Ironman Kona Lottery” or the “Ironman Legacy Program,”
