Entries open and spaces still available for the Leeds Triathlon, held in the Brownlees’ backyard.
The organisers of the Leeds Triathlon, which takes place on Sunday 9 September 2012, have confirmed that registration is open for the 2012 event and places are still available.
With a 1.5 km open water lake swim, a 44 km challenging cycle and a testing 10 km run, true Yorkshire grit is required for anyone lining up on the start line in September. The sprint distance is an easier alternative with a 750m swim, a 24 km cycle and a 6.7 km run.
Starting and finishing in Leeds’ famous Roundhay Park, the triathlon starts with a swim in the Waterloo Lake before heading out of the park and continuing with a picturesque, challenging cycle section using the quiet perimeter road around Wetherby and the Old Great North Road. The run comprises 3 laps along the park paths for the standard distance and 2 laps for the sprint, on both grass and tarmac.
The Leeds Triathlon is well known for its crowd support and atmosphere, with the popular park buzzing with spectators and the local community showing their support for the event whilst cheering on the competitors. Transition takes place in the park, providing an exciting spectacle for those who just want to watch.
Event costs are £62 for individual entries or £75 for team entries, including numbered transition racking, electronic chip timing and an excellent goody bag. The prize giving takes place after the event, with prizes awarded in the following categories: overall winners (male and female), male and female age groups, relay team prize, club prize (first 3 athletes from the same club) and novice prize.
Starting in waves, the first competitors take to the water at 8 am. This is also a great event for businesses to get involved in to promote fitness in the work place and build team spirit.
Entries to the BTF sanctioned Leeds Triathlon close on 1 September 2012 or when sold out, go to http://www.xtramileevents.com/events/calendar/leeds-triathlon to register now.
Race Director Simon Hill commented: “The Leeds Triathlon is an important race on the UK triathlon circuit, and we are looking forward to putting on a great event again for everyone involved. This is one of our most challenging events and we are pleased that the local community is fully behind us and showing their support. Triathletes from local clubs and from all over the country have already signed up for 2012.”
The course records are currently held by Richard Howarth from the Leeds & Bradford Triathlon Club (2:04:34) and Jess Learmonth (2:26:26).
If you prefer to take part in a pool-based triathlon of sprint distance then make sure you sign up for the Leeds Xpress Triathlon on 29 July 2012. The Leeds Xpress Triathlon is part of the Xtra Mile Events Tri Sprint Series with five pool-based triathlons of sprint distance taking place around the North West of England. Competitors can also register for the Leeds Xpress Triathlon as a single event only.
