One of Ironman’s biggest stars, Caroline Steffen, will run on clouds this season as On partners with the Swiss athlete and her “Alaska teamTBB Philippines” teammates.
Caroline Steffen of Switzerland and her teammates have chosen On as their new weapons of choice in a quest to win the Ironman World Championships this year. Steffen took silver in 2010 and led last year’s race until 6 miles to the finish line.
The Long Distance Triathlon World Champion is feared for her strong swim and bike performances, but often suffered on the runs. She said: “I am super happy with my new shoes! In the On’s my legs are significantly less beaten up than they would normally be.” Steffen has chosen the On for its mix of a soft landing and an explosive push-off.
After weeks of evaluating different shoe brands, Caroline Steffen debuted racing in On at the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon earlier this month. Steffen finished a strong third in a race that was merely intended to prepare for bigger things to come in 2012. In Abu Dhabi, Steffen smiled as she flew across the finish line in her brand-new Cloudracers, On’s super-lightweight race model, which she again showcased this weekend by taking a strong victory in the Ironman Asia Pacific Championships in Melbourne, Australia. The Cloudracer, the newest addition to On’s range, is scheduled to hit stores in April.
Steffen’s next stops on her way to Hawaii will see her racing in Ironman 70.3 Rapperswil and the European Ironman Championships in Frankfurt.
Caroline Steffen is part of “Alaska teamTBB Philippines”, which consists of 4 pro athletes (Caroline Steffen (SUI), David Dellow (AUS), Ali Fitch (AUS) and Mat O’ Halloran (CAN) and a number of Filipino scholarship athletes who will be mentored and trained by teamTBB world class coaching to become some of the best in Asia, thus providing hope and opportunity for young athletes.
teamTBB owner Alex Bok says about the partnership with On “We have looked long and hard at our run shoe partner as the wrong shoe can injure an athlete and not every shoe works for all athletes. After initial athlete tests by Caroline Steffen and our coaching team’s review, we are truly excited about the On technology and believe it fits all of our athletes extremely well.”
On’s headquarter is located in Zurich, Switzerland. It’s award-winning CloudTec cushioning system was developed by fellow Swiss Olivier Bernhard, himself a six time Ironman Winner and three time Duathlon World Champion. “On is very happy to work with one of the greatest athletes in triathlon”, said Bernhard about the partnership with Steffen, and added, tongue-in-cheek: “Caroline is like On – high performance, Swiss made.”
