Saint Lucia Triathlon 2013 Announced
Olympic legend Daley Thompson joins Saint Lucia in launching the island’s first ever triathlon event.
For the first time in its history, the beautiful island of Saint Lucia will stage an inaugural International triathlon event supported by double Olympic gold medal winner and British athletics legend, Daley Thompson. Launching the event on island on 23 November 2013, Daley will act as Ambassador for the triathlon, joining competitors as they ready themselves for the start.
The Saint Lucia Triathlon 2013 will be the culmination of a week-long festival of fun activities hosted by Tri St Lucia and the Saint Lucia Tourist Board including an ocean swim, an aquathon and a beach run. Designed with all ages and fitness levels in mind, these activities will provide holidaymakers with a taste of the overall triathlon event, offering families, couples and single people the opportunity to take part.
With three separate competitive distances available, the course includes a swim in the beautiful clear waters of Pigeon Island Bay, a run across some of Saint Lucia’s tough hilly volcanic topography and a challenging bike ride. Event distances include:
- The Dagger: 200m swim, 5km bike, 2.5km run
- The Pistol: 750m swim, 10km bike, 5km run
- The Cutlass: 1500m swim, 20km bike, 10km run
Leading Caribbean specialist Caribtours, will create bespoke travel and hotel packages for UK travellers looking to take part. Packages will include triathlon entry and entry into a number of other events such as the beach swim, the beach run and an Aquathlon. Travellers booking via Caribtours will also be able to attend a number of island receptions including a pre-race party, a post event BBQ with prize giving and a spectacular ocean boat trip for all competitors. Airport transfers and free bike carriage on the flights are also available.
Jean Marc Flambert, Marketing Director, UK and Europe, said: “We are delighted to be able to support the Saint Lucia Triathlon as we strongly believe that Saint Lucia can offer a great back drop to many sporting events. Saint Lucia is well known as a destination for cricket and with the Youth Commonwealth games coming to Saint Lucia in 2017, we are keen to start showcasing to island to other sports people. With support of athletic greats such as Daley Thompson, it’s sure to be a great success.”
Race ambassador Daley Thompson said: “I’m extremely excited to be part of the inaugural Saint Lucia Triathlon. The stunning scenery and humid conditions will make it one of the most idyllic but challenging triathlons I’ve worked on. The three different distances also mean there is something for everyone and with places filling up quickly, people will need to act fast to secure their place. I can’t wait to meet everyone at the finishing line!”
The Saint Lucia Triathlon is being organised by the London 2012 Olympic triathlon competition manager, John Lunt, and his experienced team. Their aim is to support and grow triathlon events in the Caribbean, especially in Saint Lucia. Following the event, they will be donating all their equipment to the islanders so they can organise their own events and encourage more Saint Lucians to start swimming.
