Cave And Bozzone Win Ironman 70.3 Miami
Britain’s Leanda Cave and New Zealand’s Terenzo Bozzone take the 70.3 titles in Miami.
Last year’s late season proved fruitful for Leanda Cave and judging by her winning performance at Ironman 70.3 Miami last weekend, she seems to be holding onto her form well following her Ironman World Championship win earlier this month.
Cave left the water 28 seconds behind fellow Brit Jodie Swallow, who was first to transition in 23:23. Racing hard as ever on the bike, Cave moved to the front and had built a lead of 1min52secs coming into T2, with Austria’s Lisa Huetthaler her nearest rival. The USA’s Margaret Shapiro was next to rack her bike, still in with a chance at only 2mins49secs down.
Cave continued the race with a strong run of 1:24:45, enough to hold off Huetthaler and claim the win in 4:07:27. The Austrian was next in, crossing the line 1min21secs later after a 1:24:13 half marathon. Shapiro claimed the final podium place in 4:09:47.
In the men’s race, New Zealand’s Terenzo Bozzone left the water in sixth place (22:44) close behind leader Francesco Godoy of Spain (22:29) and went on to establish himself at the head of the bike race. Coming into transition, the Kiwi was bested only by Switzerland’s Jan Van Berkel (2:04:13), who began the run 18 seconds ahead of Bozzone and 24 seconds up on Germany’s Nils Frommhold.
Frommhold was next to take the lead, shadowed closely by Bozzone, with Van Berkel struggling to maintain pace. Germany’s Horst Reichel was moving swiftly up the road behind the leaders following his 2:03:55 bike split, the fastest of the day.
A pattern soon emerged through the first 10km with Bozzone and Frommhold trading the lead while Van Berkel and Reichel stuck together nearly two minutes back.
Bozzone managed to edge away in the second half of the run as Frommhold began to suffer, the Kiwi building a lead of 1min36secs by the time he crossed the line in 3:42:17, clocking the day’s fastest run in 1:12:04. Van Berkel pushed ahead of Reichel to take second in 3:43:52 and Horst rounded out the podium in 3:44:14 after Frommhold slipped back to fifth behind James Cunnama.
