The Oulton Park Autumn Duathlon, which took place at the Oulton Park Motor Racing Circuit in Cheshire, saw nearly 400 elite and amateur athletes taking part in either the standard or the sprint distance race.

Following the announcement that the Oulton Park Spring Duathlon on 17March 2013 will be one of the qualifiers for both the 2013 ETU Standard and the Sprint Distance Duathlon European Championships, the organisers saw some last minute entries of athletes wanting to practice for the qualifiers next spring.

The organisers also tested out state of the art lap counting technology in preparation for the qualifiers in March, which gives competitors individual lap times.

The standard distance race incorporated a 8.6 km run (2 laps) followed by an exhilarating 38.7 km cycle (9 laps) and a final run lap of 4.3 km, totalling 51.6 km. Sprint distance competitors started with a 4.3 km run (1 lap), followed by a 21.5 km cycle (5 laps) and a final run lap of 4.3 km, covering a total distance of 30.1 km.

In the standard distance race, Philip Eaves took the men’s title in a time of 01:45:59 followed by Luke Pollard in 01:46:21. Ian Grime had the fastest times in both run legs and claimed the third overall in 01:47:03. Donna Edmondson dominated the women’s standard race with the fastest times on both runs and on the bike, finishing in 01:59:54. Rebecca Brand came second in 02:02:08 and Hilary Ross finished in third place in 02:07:57.

The sprint race saw a fantastic performance from Mat Rushbrook who dominated in all disciplines and won the men’s race in 01:03:26. Ian Lawton, who came second in the Oulton Park Standard Distance Duathlon in March earlier this year, took part in the sprint distance yesterday and came second again in a time of 01:04:57, followed by Jack Lawson in 01:06:41. Sarah Rose was the clear winner in the women’s race in 01:14:00 with the fastest times in both run legs and the cycle. Michelle Dew and Jill Carlin were battling it out for second place, with Dew finishing with an 11 second lead after a faster final run leg in 01:20:50.

Sponsors of the Oulton Park Autumn Duathlon included Zoot, Aftershokz Headphones, Accelerade, Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative, Athlete Matters, and Clif Bar.

Race Director Simon Hill commented: “The Oulton Park Autum Duathlon is a great race to finish the season at one of the country’s finest motor racing circuits. A traffic free race track, super smooth tarmac, transition in the pits and a banked hairpin made for some awesome racing yesterday, giving all competitors the fantastic chance to see how fast they can really go and finishing the season on a high. A big thank you to everyone who took part and everyone who supported the event, including the marshals from Northwich ATC and the Oulton Park circuit staff.”
