We test the Giant Propel Advanced 3 aero road bike in our four-ride review
Giant Propel Advanced 3
Giant’s Propel aero road platform was launched last year with a limited, pricey range – something Giant has addressed with the new Advanced 3. The component package is based around Shimano 105. Shifting performance is spot on and with all-internal cable routing through ports behind the head-tube, it’s very clean too. Once on the road, it’s clear Giant have hit the absolute sweet spot with the Propel.
The Propel’s shape is based around Giant’s superb TCR – making the it a fast handling bike that keeps things involving and exciting but never drifts into being twitchy or nervous. With the Propel, Giant have created more than just an aero race machine – it’s simply a brilliant all-rounder with a boundless enthusiasm for speed – a bike that loves to whir up to a savage pace and hold it with envy-inducing nonchalance.
The Propel’s 8.2kg weight (for a large model) proves that aero speed doesn’t have to equal heaviness anymore – it climbs with aplomb, the 28T rear cassette giving good range despite the standard chainset. The hidden V-brakes take getting used to but give more than enough power. The bike’s stable, stiff feel and spot-on handling created a desire to fully exploit the rapid nature of the Propel on descents.
The ride quality is easily as good as Giant’s award-winning TCR – the frameset soaks up enough high frequency vibrations to keep fatigue at bay. In fact, for a full-on race ready aero machine, it’s pretty much peerless for the ride’s smoothness. The new 35mm deep Giant P-Elite A wheels have a broad, Zipp-like rim and really impressed us with their modern design and great feel on the road.
