The results of this year’s Kona Bike Count are beginning to filter through, starting with the bikes and aero bars.
The annual Bike Count logs all the equipment used by competitors at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii. The outcome is almost as hotly-anticipated as the actual race results, with manufacturers learning significant trends for the triathlon market.
Cervélo easily came out on top in the bike category, with 468 athletes (27 per cent) choosing one of their bikes for the 2010 race. They were well ahead of Specialized in second (113 athletes) and Trek in third (108 athletes).
591 athletes opted for Profile Design aero bars (roughly a third of all competitors), with Vision (446) and Zipp (136) claiming ‘podium’ finishes. Both of the elite race winners, Chris McCormack and Mirinda Carfrae, used Profile Design aero bars as they rode to victory last weekend.
