A disruptive health drinks brand has proven chia seeds are more than just a fad, two years on from creating Europe’s first chia seed based drink.
The unique beverages from WOW combine nutritional cold-pressed fruits and vegetables with over 11g of chia seeds, a great source of antioxidants, fibre, iron and calcium. The drinks are now stocked in many major British retailers and extensively across Europe.
Chia seeds also provide omega-3 fatty acids, usually found in fish. Research has found that, gram for gram, chia contains eight times more omega-3 than salmon. Positive benefits of omega-3 include reducing cholesterol and heart disease risk, as well as increasing skin, hair and nail health.
A 250ml bottle will provide one of your five-a-day and contains 33% less sugar than other fruit juices.
Protein-packed chia seeds attracted a number of celebrity fans, including Meghan Markle, Victoria Beckham and Ellie Goulding, but the health benefits of the seeds have been known for centuries. Aztecs, who are famed for their ability to run hundreds of miles barefoot without rest or injury, drank chia seeds in ‘chia fresca’ to boost their energy levels.
The South-American seed has also been found to support hydration and electrolyte balance, which may be helpful for those with active lifestyles.
The drinks are available in three flavours, Orange, Mango & Carrot; Apple, Spinach & Kiwi and Watermelon & Pomegranate.
Founder of WOW, Oliver Dickinson said: “When chia seeds first hit the scene, many people dismissed them as a fad. However we knew that their incredible health benefits, which have been credited for hundreds of years, meant they were so much more than just a passing trend. Small but mighty, chia seeds not only a plant-based source of omega-3 but high in fibre too. We are so proud that WOW Chia Seed Drinks have been providing so much more than just one of your five a day for two years and can’t wait to continue to spread awareness about chia seeds’ nutritional properties.”
WOW Chia Seed Drinks are priced at £2.50 and can be found in selected Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Boots, Co-op and many more retailers.
