We take the 2014 Scott Foil 20 out for a spin in our four ride review
Scott was the first to prove that an aero road bike could be stiff, with less in the way of a weight compromise, and be quick through the air. The Foil tips the scales at an impressive 8.26kg, good for a bike at this price, exceptional for one with proven aerodynamic prowess. At under 1.4kg, the frame and fork combination is impressively light and it feels it when you first take it out for a spin.
The Foil 20 is never too firm or stiff to hinder progress on broken surfaces, but after a few hours in the saddle, the firm front end and all-aluminium cockpit leaves you with the onset of tingling fingers. We haven’t had the same experience from pricier Foils, so can only put it down to the stiff Syncros aluminium bar and stem. We love the responsive, reactive ride but it’s not a bike you’ll want to cruise along on all day.
Scott’s cut-off aerofoil tube shaping has a slippery action through the air and the Foil shapes up as a truly impressive speed machine. The full-on racing geometry means responsive handling, and aided by an impressive set of Conti tyres, it always feels confident whatever the weather. On the flat, acceleration is smooth; it skips across the road surface, piling on speed at an impressive rate.
The good range of gearing (12-30,50/34) makes short work of steep inclines. That said, it can feel stunted by the extra mass in the tough Shimano R500 hoops – a frame of this calibre deserves better. The brake pads’ meagre performance means it takes fistfuls of lever pull to get any real reaction on wet days, and a bike this fast needs to be able to stop much better from speed, especially when descending.
