New Shimano C50 wheels are a versatile semi-aero option – if you don’t mind a bit of extra weight. These wheels are best suited to flat or undulating courses where extra mass is outweighed by the aero benefit. Using the rim technologyShimano C50 wheels review developed for Shimano’s Dura Ace level wheels, the new RS80 C50 wheelset, with Ultegra hubs and bladed straight pull spokes, feature a 50mm structural deep-section carbon rim with an aluminium tyre bed and braking surface. They are deep enough for a noticeable aerodynamic advantage, though not so deep that the bike’s handling is too adversely affected in crosswinds. Out on the road they responded well to inputs of power, but they never felt so stiff and uncompromising that we’d be put off using them in longer races. Plus, as deep section wheels go, at around £850 a set, they won’t break the bank; however, the big compromise comes with their weight – 1,875g a pair, including skewers.

Verdict Good value deep-section wheelset, but there are lighter options out there
