We fire up the Trek Speed Concept 9 for our Four Ride review.
- First ride
Trek’s Speed Concept aero bike has a top feature set, with slick solutions for carrying tools and food that make the bike more aero. The 9.9 version has SRAM Red transmission, including the aero R2C shifters and integrated aero brakes. But we’re bummed by the magnesium railed fi’zi:k Arione Tri2 saddle – we’d expect titanium rails on a £7,500 bike.
- Fast ride
The Speed Concept has the most compelling aero story on the market with its Kammtail Virtual Airfoil patented tube shaping. It takes the fastest airfoil for a headwind then chops its tail must past its widest section. It tricks the air into thinking the foil is longer and keps it flowing quickly. In our first race on this we set a PB on a testing 10-mile course.
- Hilly ride
However, things slacken off when the road points up. While the bar extensions offer great adjustability, the base bar has a forward sweep, which will have you reaching on climbs. Stand up on the bullhorns and the cockpit is short. When wrenching on the bars we detected flex from the handlebar and the stem. A medium bike weighs, 7.98kg, complete, but without pedals.
- Long ride
Fit is the key to comfort on a long haul. Despite our problems with the Bontrager base bar’s shape, its extensions allow you to shift gear easily in an aero position. The Speed Concept utilises a full-length aero seat post, so height tweaks are a 5mm turn away. The chassis isn’t stiff, and that’s good over 112 miles. Road vibration is damped for a comfortable ride.
