Althorp Duathlon 2013 Race Report.

Phil Holland won the Standard Distance event

Despite a two week delay due to a waterlogged venue 400 high quality athletes lined up for the Althorp Duathlon on Saturday 2nd March. At stake for many was a place at the World and European Sprint Duathlon Championships in Canada and the Netherlands. After a chilly start the weather soon warmed and the hog roast and 14 piece orchestra added to the stately home atmosphere

In the Sprint event first to enter transition was Alex Sobolewski with Daniel Bigham quickest on the bike but they were soon swallowed up by the strong field with Mark Morgan from Huub TFN taking first place in 1:05:25 ahead of Alan Murchison from Winchester & District AC with Phil Melling in third. In the ladies race Ruth Barnes from DBMax Tri was first into transition, over a minute ahead of Eloise Du Luart and India Lee. A blistering pace on the bike took Lee to the lead into T2 but a fine second run took Barnes back into the lead, finishing in 1:14:02 with Inda in second and Alice Hector in third.

In the Standard distance a closely fought race had Phil Holland first into T1 but was overtaken by Richard Shepherd on the bike, leaving them to battle it out on the final run. Holland had enough left in the tank to finish in 1:55:33 only 17 seconds ahead of Shepherd with Eóin Ó’flynn in third. Cecilia Davis-Hayes was the strongest all-rounder in the ladies event, finishing 2 minutes ahead of last year’s winner, Stacey Penn, followed by Tasmin Neale.
