Multiple Ironman Champion Bracht (GER) and Ironman veteran Csomor (HUN) race to victory at the inaugural Ironman Los Cabos event in Mexico.
First out of the water was Australian Luke Mckenzie in a time of 49:23, just a few seconds ahead of the chasing pack, which included American Andres Castillo (49:30), Australian Brett Carter (49:30), Axel Zeebroek (BEL) (49:33) and the German Maik Twelsiek (49:35).
Mckenzie continued his heroics on the bike and managed to stay out in front for 34 miles before being swept up by the chasing pack of Carter, Castillo and Zeebroek. Bracht gradually overcame his swim deficit and his race-fastest bike split of 4:37:34 saw him enter T2 in poll position with fellow compatriot Twelsiek, who recorded a 4:41:15 bike split.
The run was, however, a one-man affair with Bracht dominating from start to finish, and crossing the finish line in 8:26:48. The real battle was for second place, and Trevor Deslaut of France just managed to hold off Hungary’s Jozsef Major by 34 seconds to claim the runners-up spot – 6.38 minutes behind Bracht.
In the women’s race Michelle Vesterby (DEN) was first out the water with a 55.12 minute split and a considerable lead over the other main contenders; Hungary’s Erika Csomar, who raced without a timing chip all day, exited the water in just under an hour, while Mareen Hufe of Germany posted a split of 1:04:03 and Lisa Ribes of the USA a time of 1:04:23.
On the bike, Hufe powered to a race-best-time of 5:09:23, which saw her race into T2 in top spot, with a 4:22 minute advantage over Vesterby and a 12:38 advantage over Ribbs.
The run leg was where the podium was finally decided; Ribbs posted a 3:07:15 marathon time, which saw her move past Hufe (3:21:52), but fall short of running down Vesterby who ran 3:14:18. Csomor was however too strong and ran past all her rivals, posting a winning time of 9:35:34 – 57 seconds ahead of Vesterby and 3:01 minutes ahead of Ribes.
