Greenwood and Peel winners of Buxton Triathlon
The Buxton Triathlon took place last Sunday 14th July, with Terry Greenwood and Hannah Peel taking the winning titles after a great race and fantastic performance in the scorching heat.
Aimed at both seasoned triathletes and novices, this popular pool based sprint distance triathlon was a sell out race with 200 triathletes signed up and a total of 147 completing the race and crossing the finish line. The Buxton Triathlon is based in Buxton’s Pavilion Gardens at the Buxton Swimming and Fitness Centre and it takes in some of the finest scenery of the Peak District and Goyt Valley. The 400m swim in the Buxton Pool was followed by a 21 km cycle ride and a 5 km run.
Terry Greenwood defended his title from 2012 and was the clear winner again in a time of 01:04:02 whilst Hannah Peel clinched the women’s title with a sprint to the finish line in 01:23:43 in only her second ever triathlon. Greenwood came out of the water in 9th position but made up time with the fastest cycle leg and run, showing his class and resulting in a clear lead and win. Mark Saggers from RAF Tri Club was the runner up in a time of 01:07:32 with Steve Penney taking third place in 01:08:01. In the women’s field Hannah Peel from Sheffield Tri Club and Jane Mellor both put in an excellent performance with Peel beating Mellor by one second in the battle for the winning title, finishing in 01:23:43. Catherine White from Radcliffe AC came third in 01:25:58.
Race Director Simon Hill commented: “I would like to express a big thank you to all the triathletes who were lining up at the start line today to race in these hot weather conditions. Buxton’s Pavilion Gardens make a great venue for our triathlon and I am pleased that we have delivered another fantastic event here. This is without doubt one of our most picturesque events in our calendar and has one of the friendliest atmospheres.
“A big thank you also goes to the Buxton Swimming and Fitness Centre and Pavilion Gardens’ management and staff, High Peak Borough Council, Xtra Mile Events Crew, High Peak Tri Club, BTF Referees, Manchester Medical Services and Derbyshire Constabulary for their help with staging this event, as well as all the spectators and supporters who turned out in large numbers to watch and cheer on the athletes.”
