Phil Mosley reports from Hamburg on a return to form for Javier Gomez and a tight finish in the women’s race
Men: J Gomez (ESP) 1:43:07
Women: L Norden (SWE) 1:53:53
Javier Gomez powered past Olympic champion Jan Frodeno towards the end of the 10km run, in front of a huge crowd in Hamburg to secure round four of the ITU World Championship Series. Spain’s Gomez seems back to the same form that saw him crowned World Champion in 2008. After posting a speedy 29:17 for the 10km, he said: “I knew Jan [Frodeno] would be faster than me if I let it come down to a sprint, so I gave everything I had at the beginning of the last lap. I believed that I could do it if I put everything I had in the final lap and I was able to pull away.”
Britain’s Tim Don took third place, 50 seconds adrift of Gomez.
In the woman’s race it took a photo finish to separate the two leaders, with Sweden’s Lisa Nordén’s sprint across the line fractionally ahead of Emma Moffatt from Australia. Moffatt had led out the non-wetsuit swim, putting 30 seconds into Nordén, leaving Nordén to claw back the deficit on the bike, then post a race-winning 34:19 10km run split. It wasn’t just Nordén and Moffatt who battled it out on the run, and only six seconds separated first place from sixth place. Another photo finish saw Britain’s Vicky Holland narrowly losing fourth place to South Africa’s Kate Roberts.
