Loughborough Triathlon are crowned English Club Champions at the National Club Championships.
Triathlon club, Loughborough Triathlon, were crowned English Club Champions at the Triathlon England – National Club Championships at Nottingham National Water Sports Centre, which took place on Saturday 24th August.
The team of four from Loughborough Triathlon, took top place on the podium after collecting the best score from each individual member’s race result. The club tactically put together a team with a range of age-groups to make sure they got the best points position.
The race was a sprint distance format which started with a 500m open-water swim, a 15km bike and then onto a 5km run. Loughborough Triathlon completed the race with a combined time of 3:07:29.
The whole event was raced by individuals in a team of four, with the final result being calculated on position points. Each individual was given points dependent on their age-group and overall position and the lower the points received in each team, the higher the overall team’s position.
In the men’s-only event, Huub Tfn took top place on the podium with a winning time of 3:02:29. Women’s team, Cambridge Smash-It from Cambridge Triathlon Club, totalled the winning women’s-only time of 3:16:20.
The aim of this race format was to encourage clubs to think strategically about their team and to include a range of age-groups, rather than clubs choosing their top performers. This dynamic way of racing meant the excitement and anticipation was high right until the end of the event, as teams did not know their final scores until the last member crossed the line.
Jem Lawson, Chair of Triathlon England, said: “The National Club Championships event has been a fabulous success and the perfect way to experience a triathlon event. Whether you raced on the day or came down to support the athletes, we send huge congratulations to all those who entered, and the worthy club winners.
“It’s great to see how interest in the sport is continuing to grow and we are excited to say that our 2013 Triathlon England – National Triathlon Championships has proved very popular. With event sell-outs, it shows these events are growing, and we hope that this in turn will encourage many more to get involved.
