Top performances at Oulton Park Spring Duathlon with new lap records set by Jimmy Kershaw and Sian Edwards
The Oulton Park Spring Duathlon took place last Sunday 16 March at the famous motor racing circuit in Cheshire, featuring both a sprint and a standard distance race.
The race was also the first Great Britain Age-Group Team qualification event for the 2014 ITU Sprint Distance Duathlon World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain, and it attracted a large field of elite athletes as well as amateur and novice racers. 175 athletes crossed the finish line in the standard distance race and 304 completed the sprint distance race.
The Oulton Park Spring Duathlon is held at one of the country’s finest motor racing circuits and offers many unique features including the mass start on the starting grid, transition in the pits and a traffic free race track. The banked hairpin and the track’s super smooth tarmac guarantee a fast and unique racing experience for all competitors, along with excellent spectating opportunities.
Some outstanding performances were witnessed on the track, and the sprint distance race saw the lap records smashed by 17 year old Jimmy Kershaw and Sian Edwards, both proving that they are in top form for the season ahead.
Jimmy Kershaw (OO Tri), who came second last year, impressed with an extraordinary performance and managed to hold on to the lead after covering the first mile of the run leg in 4 minutes 40 seconds. Kershaw clocked the fastest run legs and the 3rd fastest cycle, crossing the finish line in 01:02:09. The women’s sprint field saw some strong performances too, with Sian Edwards dominating the field and claiming the winning title in a time of 01:09:11. Edwards took the lead on the first cycle lap and finished the race two and a half minutes ahead of runner up Charlotte Taylor.
Matt Moorhouse (Athlete Matters), the UK’s #1 Powerman duathlete who uses the Oulton Park Spring Duathlon as a marker for the season and to build his training on, took the winning title in the standard race for the 4th year in a row. With a lead of over four and a half minutes, Moorhouse finished the race in a time of 01:43:19. Jenni Muston (Wakefield Triathlon Club), who came third in the sprint race last year, was the fastest in the women’s field and secured the winning title in a time of 02:04:34.
