Ride With The Omega Pharma Quick-step Professional Cycling Team at Marie Curie Cancer Care Etape Pennines.

Omega Pharma Quick-Step Team Cycling : 100th Tour de France 2013 / Stage 13

The Marie Curie Cancer Care Etape Pennines is pleased to announce members of Omega Pharma – Quick-Step professional cycling team will ride in an exclusive wave at the event on 6th October 2013.

The inaugural OPQS Rider Club ride will take place at the Etape Pennines in 2013, offering just 150 participants the experience of riding with professional athletes including legendary Belgian cyclist Tom Boonen, five time winner of the Six days of Ghent Iljo Keisse, rising UK star Andrew Fenn and winner of the Young Rider Classification at the Tour of Qatar Nikolas Maes.

The OPQS athletes will also officially start the Etape Pennines, waving off riders as they set out on the 78 mile route through stunning County Durham countryside.

Having gained a reputation in its first year as being the UK’s toughest sportive, experienced riders will need to dig deep to overcome over 2,000 metres of climbing during the closed road course in County Durham. However, with breathtaking views and exhilarating downhill sections, hard work will certainly be rewarded. The added experience of riding with inspirational pro riders will be an unforgettable one.

Wilfried Peeters, Sports Director OPQS, said: “We are delighted to offer OPQS supporters the chance to take on this epic sportive on one of the most inspiring routes we have come across. Riding on closed roads creates a ‘Tour de France’ type experience for cycling enthusiasts and we want to go one step further by giving a select number of riders the chance to ride shoulder-to-shoulder with professional athletes, in team jerseys and with the teams official support vehicles.

“We hope that the pre-event dinner the night before will be a chance for those in the supporters’ club to get an insight into the life of a pro rider, as well as give everyone the opportunity to relax and eat well before the sportive the next day!”

The VIP riding experience, which includes entry into the official OPQS Rider Club, access to pro riders before, and during, the race and an OPQS jersey, will cost £350.

Prior to the event, VIP riders will also get their name and photo on the OPQS website and enjoy a three course meal with two to three members of the OPQS team at the exclusive OPQS Rider Club Dinner on the 5 October.

During Etape Pennines on 6 October, VIP participants will be positioned within the OPQS Rider Club wave, enjoy an exclusive OPQS wave start time joined by the four OPQS riders, wear an OPQS team shirt, have access to the OPQS support vehicle during the race and access to the OPQS masseuse and mechanic on race day.

James Robinson, IMG Challenger World Managing Director, said: “Etape Pennines has set itself apart from regular cycling events as the toughest in the UK, as well as the most rewarding. We are honoured that a professional cycling team such as OPQS, which is held in such high regard among the cycling community, will come to Etape Pennines in October. We hope not only those who will ride in this exclusive wave, but all our 2,000 participants, are inspired by their attendance. General places are still available via the website www.etapepennines.co.uk.”

Initial places to this exclusive club are limited to 150 and so early entry is advised.

With strong links to Marie Curie Cancer Care, the Etape Series has also been instrumental in encouraging participants to raise well in excess of £1.5million over its seven year history. The money raised by participants will enable the charity to provide more free, hands-on nursing care to people with terminal illness either at home, or in one of the charity’s nine hospices, while giving their families emotional and practical support.
