The Nottingham Triathlon this weekend doubled as the British Triathlon National Sprint Championships and a qualification event for the PruHealth World Triathlon Grand Final London on the 11-15 September in Hyde Park. With national titles and world championship places up for grabs, the event was fiercely competitive.

Racing over a 750m swim, 20km lake-side flat bike ride and 5km run, competitors enjoyed a safe, traffic free environment, packed grand stand finish and glorious sunshine for most of the day at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham.

The strength and depth of the field indicated that the desire for Age Group places at London’s World Championships is extremely high. The Championships offer a unique opportunity to race at the London 2012 Olympic triathlon venue and have already attracted unprecedented interest from Age Group athletes across the country.

Winner of the 40-44 Age Group, Andy Tarry, commented: “The aim for Saturday for me was to qualify for the Worlds, that’s all I was concentrating on, so I was pleasantly surprised to win my Age Group.”

The local Nottingham Triathlete and maths teacher added: “I don’t feel very race fit at the moment so providing I can get fit and stay healthy I plan to race the World Sprints, and I’m not just looking to make up the numbers!”

Tarry finished with the third fastest time overall behind David Bartlett (25-29) from www.cyclelogic.co.uk and Loughborough based Carl Shaw from the HUUB TFN Race Team.

The fastest woman on the course was Anna Turvey (30-34) from Newcastle upon Tyne who was the ETU European Champion over the sprint distance in 2011. She finished just under 30 seconds ahead of Alice Hector (30-34) and former elite junior triathlete, Lucy Smith (20-24) from Loughborough Triathlon.

So competitive were the different age group waves that over 1100 people took part and sprint finishes for medal places were common, with exciting head-to-head racing taking place.

There are two further opportunities this month to qualify for the British Age Group team to compete in London over the sprint distance. These are the Bristol Harbourside Triathlon, 23 June 2013 and Llandudno Sea Triathlon on 29 June.

The PruHealth World Triathlon Grand Final London takes place 11-15 September in Hyde Park and will feature Age Group aquathlon, sprint and standard distance races as well as an elite junior, U23, paratriathlon and senior events to decide the 2013 world champions. The event is free to view for spectators.
