For this second iteration of their Kona-winning shoe, On has shaved off 15g (a UK size 9.5 is now 233g) and added its Speedboard technology. Sitting beneath your foot, the Speedboard is a thin plastic lattice designed to evenly distribute energy and guide your running gait.

The Cloudracer 2s feel springier and more controlled than the previous version and when you run at 4min/km – the minimum pace these shoes are recommended for – they really come into their own. The signature ‘cloud’ capsules on the soles provide a buffered landing to take some sting out of hard surfaces while still being able to offer a firm feel at push off. The upper is extremely breathable and there was no pinching whatsoever despite the thin tongue.

There’s not as much shock absorption on offer as you’ll find in On’s chunkier shoes and at slower speeds they feel a bit ‘flat’, but for fast runners wanting more protection than the amount typically provided by minimalist race shoes, the Cloudracer 2s are spot on.
