The organisers of Swim Serpentine, the new two day open water swimming festival to be held over the weekend of 24-25 September, announced that 1500 places are available for the mass participation one mile swim.

Hugh Brasher, Event Director for London Marathon Events Ltd, said: “We are delighted to have received more than 4,000 entries for the mass participation one mile swim on the first day of Swim Serpentine, our new open water swimming event.

“As the open water swimming season in the UK began only this month, we have decided to extend the closing date for the mass participation mile to allow another 1500 swimmers to enter. The entry system will remain open until 1500 applications have been received, or 17:00 on Friday 24 June – whichever is earlier.

“Everyone who applied by 17:00 on Friday 20 May will be accepted into the event and we will be sending confirmation information out to them at the beginning of June.

“We look forward to a great event on 24-25 September.”

After the entry system closes, the only way to enter the event will be to apply for a place from one of the charities with places in the mass participation swim. The closing date for charity entries is 17:00 on Thursday 24 August.

All swimmers in the mass participation mile must wear either a wetsuit or use a tow-float. Both wetsuit and tow-float hire will be available at the Serpentine on the day.

On Sunday 25 September, following the mass participation one-mile event the day before, the British Open Water Swimming Championships will take place with a programme that will include an elite invitation 5km swim. The British Open Water Swimming Championships events will be held over a 3.2km course.
